Carnaval (a.k.a. "Fat Tuesday" ) is a season of joyous, indulgent, and often raucous celebrations that precedes the abstaining season of Lent. Elaborate masks are often worn to allow people to set aside their everyday identities and experience a heightened sense of celebration.
